The new Grand Seiko 44GS Limited SBGW289 is a true 36.5mm stunner
Compact and pink...obviously not reserved for female audiences.
At first, when I first saw this new Grand Seiko Heritage Collection 44GS 55th Anniversary Limited Edition SBGW289 (that's its full, humble name), I thought it was being advertised as the brand's latest female creation . On paper, with its compact case and pale pink dial, it has some reasons to be a great choice for active women who don't like diamonds. It wasn't until I strapped this SBGW289 to my wrist that I realized that Grand Seiko actually makes an amazing 36.5mm hand-wound watch that I'd obviously love to add to my collection...forget Sakura's Inspiration, gender-related preconceived notions about pink or the rather compact diameter announced by the brand. The new pink Grand Seiko 44GS Limited Edition SBGW289 is a new GS to consider!
What you are looking at is a watch with all the attributes of the 44GS series in a compact case. Launched in 1967, this watch is one of the brand's most important watches, as it introduced a design syntax conceived by Taro Tanaka that is still in use today. Sharp edges, large polished surfaces, razor-like sides, unobtrusive bezels, reflective surfaces thanks to Zaratsu technology, highly contrasting dial elements… everything that made Grand Seiko design famous over the years is back, but Different proportions - learn more compact, yet uncompromising impact.
Most of the time, watches belonging to the 44GS series are around 40mm in diameter. However, the design introduced in 1967 also featured wide shoulders and pronounced lugs, making the surface of the case covering the wrist quite high. Not that the 44GS is a big watch, but a watch with more presence than the numbers suggest. The pink 44GS Limited SBGW289 we have now is a reduced case, both in diameter and height, but still has a great wrist presence. I know the official image of the GS is all pink flowers, but when I say worn on the wrist, trust me, it's not a feminine looking watch. At the same time, it's great for active women.
With a diameter of 36.5 mm, the SBGW289 is perfect for a chronograph. The lug-to-lug distance hasn't been measured precisely, but we should max out at about 44mm. And the thickness, if not super thin, is a very nice 11.6mm, which is visually considered lower since the watch has a box-shaped sapphire crystal. On the wrist, the watch has never been too small for my 16.5cm wrist. I can imagine men with wrists over 18cm would find it too small, but for many of us it's simply fantastic. And since the watch is worn on a three-link brushed and polished stainless steel bracelet, it doesn't feel refined and sophisticated either. In addition, the sharpness of the 44GS series brings what you would expect from a casual watch. Wrist present; check. Wrist balance; check. Visual impact; view. And with 100m water resistance, it is even suitable for weekend use.
The dial of the Grand Seiko 44GS Limited SBGW289 is said to be inspired by "Sakura-kakushi, a brief moment in spring where snow and cherry blossoms coexist in northern Japan." The result is a very nice textured dial, giving a silvery finish in most cases Impressive, only a slight pink hue brings something different, something original but not obtrusive. And knowing the positive response around the pink dial Shunbun SBGA413, no doubt many will be drawn to this quintessential GS dial. The hands and application markings are a tradition in the brand's production and are meant to be extremely detailed and beveled to an impressive level. Thanks to multiple facets, the contrast between elements can never go wrong, even if they have been redesigned to be more elegant.
Inside this 36.5mm stunner case houses the famous movement, the Calibre 9S64. This hand-wound engine is the basis for one of our favorite GS models, the time-only SBGW231 - also named after our founder, the Japanese Calatrava. The 9S64 is hidden behind a closed caseback but retains all its attributes, which means a 4Hz frequency, 72 hours of power reserve and a claimed accuracy of +5 to -3 seconds per day.
